Benign Growth For Mountain Alliance AG (ETR:ECF) Underpins Its Share Price

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.2x Mountain Alliance AG (ETR:ECF) may be sending very bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Germany have P/E ratios greater than 16x and even P/E's higher than 29x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

Earnings have risen firmly for Mountain Alliance recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Mountain Alliance's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Mountain Alliance's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 15% last year. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 11% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.

In light of this, it's understandable that Mountain Alliance's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

What We Can Learn From Mountain Alliance's P/E?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Mountain Alliance maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Mountain Alliance that you need to be mindful of.
