What Type Of Returns Would DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate's(ETR:DMRE) Shareholders Have Earned If They Purchased Their SharesYear Ago?

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. Unfortunately the DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate AG (ETR:DMRE) share price slid 24% over twelve months. That's well below the market return of 8.6%. On the other hand, the stock is actually up 10% over three years.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate, it has a TSR of -15% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 8.6% in the last year, DEMIRE Deutsche Mittelstand Real Estate shareholders lost 15% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years.
