Did Business Growth Power ACCENTRO Real Estate's (ETR:A4Y) Share Price Gain of 173%?
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. One great example is ACCENTRO Real Estate AG (ETR:A4Y) which saw its share price drive 173% higher over five years.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, ACCENTRO Real Estate actually saw its EPS drop 48% per year.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
In contrast revenue growth of 16% per year is probably viewed as evidence that ACCENTRO Real Estate is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between ACCENTRO Real Estate's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for ACCENTRO Real Estate shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 187%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that ACCENTRO Real Estate shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 23% over the last year. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 23% a year, is even better. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
