Recent 4.0% pullback isn't enough to hurt long-term Deutsche EuroShop (ETR:DEQ) shareholders, they're still up 3.2% over 5 years
For many, the main point of investing is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers So we wouldn't blame long term Deutsche EuroShop AG (ETR:DEQ) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 28% over a half decade. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 15% in the last three months.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Deutsche EuroShop moved from a loss to profitability. However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.
The steady dividend doesn't really explain why the share price is down. It's not immediately clear to us why the stock price is down but further research might provide some answers.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Deutsche EuroShop the TSR over the last 5 years was 3.2%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Deutsche EuroShop provided a TSR of 5.8% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 0.6% per year over five year. This suggests the company might be improving over time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Deutsche EuroShop better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
