HAEMATO AG's (ETR:HAEK) periodic dividend will be increasing on the 21st of July to €1.20, with investors receiving 9.1% more than last year's €1.10. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 5.5%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

HAEMATO's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, HAEMATO's dividend was higher than its profits, but the free cash flows quite comfortably covered it. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.
Analysts expect a massive rise in earnings per share in the next year. If recent patterns in the dividend continue, we could see the payout ratio reaching 58% which is fairly sustainable.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €1.67 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €1.10. The dividend has shrunk at around 4.1% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. HAEMATO's earnings per share has shrunk at 50% a year over the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.
HAEMATO's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
