Not Many Are Piling Into Geratherm Medical AG (ETR:GME) Stock Yet As It Plummets 26%

Geratherm Medical AG (ETR:GME) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 33% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that Geratherm Medical's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Medical Equipment industry in Germany, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.7x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Geratherm Medical's Recent Performance Look Like?

Geratherm Medical hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Geratherm Medical's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 23%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 42% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 12% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 4.1%, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that Geratherm Medical's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Geratherm Medical's P/S?

Geratherm Medical's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, Geratherm Medical's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
