If You Had Bought EUWAX (FRA:EUX) Shares A Year Ago You'd Have Earned 23% Returns
If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. To wit, the EUWAX Aktiengesellschaft (FRA:EUX) share price is 23% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 3.4% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Zooming out, the stock is actually down 22% in the last three years.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
EUWAX was able to grow EPS by 291% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 23% increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about EUWAX as it was before. This could be an opportunity.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of EUWAX, it has a TSR of 31% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that EUWAX shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 31% over the last year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 2% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand EUWAX better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with EUWAX (at least 2 which can't be ignored) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
