Even though Baader Bank (ETR:BWB) has lost €22m market cap in last 7 days, shareholders are still up 299% over 5 years
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is Baader Bank Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:BWB) which saw its share price drive 253% higher over five years. It's down 11% in the last seven days.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last half decade, Baader Bank became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Dividend Lost
The value of past dividends are accounted for in the total shareholder return (TSR), but not in the share price return mentioned above. Many would argue the TSR gives a more complete picture of the value a stock brings to its holders. Baader Bank's TSR over the last 5 years is 299%; better than its share price return. Even though the company isn't paying dividends at the moment, it has done in the past.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Baader Bank shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 5.6% over the last year. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 32% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. Is Baader Bank cheap compared to other companies?
