Some Confidence Is Lacking In Vossloh AG's (ETR:VOS) P/E

It's not a stretch to say that Vossloh AG's (ETR:VOS) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in Germany, where the median P/E ratio is around 15x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

There hasn't been much to differentiate Vossloh's and the market's earnings growth lately. It seems that many are expecting the mediocre earnings performance to persist, which has held the P/E back. If this is the case, then at least existing shareholders won't be losing sleep over the current share price.

Is There Some Growth For Vossloh?

Vossloh's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 6.0% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 37% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 8.5% per annum during the coming three years according to the seven analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 15% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it interesting that Vossloh is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Final Word

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Vossloh currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Vossloh you should know about.
