INDUS Holding's (ETR:INH) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

The board of INDUS Holding AG (ETR:INH) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of €1.20 on the 27th of May, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield 4.7%, which is above the industry average.

INDUS Holding's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. However, prior to this announcement, INDUS Holding's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 34.5%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was €1.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €1.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 1.8% a year over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.

INDUS Holding May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Unfortunately, INDUS Holding's earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year. If INDUS Holding is struggling to find viable investments, it always has the option to increase its payout ratio to pay more to shareholders.

Our Thoughts On INDUS Holding's Dividend

Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
