Frequentis (ETR:FQT) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To €0.22
The board of Frequentis AG (ETR:FQT) has announced that the dividend on 7th of June will be increased to €0.22, which will be 10.0% higher than last year's payment of €0.20 which covered the same period. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 0.6% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

Frequentis' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Before making this announcement, Frequentis was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 27.2%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 11% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Frequentis Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The company has maintained a consistent dividend for a few years now, but we would like to see a longer track record before relying on it. The annual payment during the last 3 years was €0.15 in 2020, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.20. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 10% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 4.9% per year. While EPS growth is quite low, Frequentis has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.
In Summary
Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. For instance, we've picked out 1 warning sign for Frequentis that investors should take into consideration.
