Earnings grew faster than the 27% return delivered to Yusys Technologies (SZSE:300674) shareholders over the last year
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the Yusys Technologies Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300674) share price is 25% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 8.3% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 15% in the last three years.
While the stock has fallen 6.1% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the last year Yusys Technologies grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 42%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 25% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. So it seems like the market has cooled on Yusys Technologies, despite the growth. Interesting.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Yusys Technologies' TSR for the last 1 year was 27%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Yusys Technologies shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 27% over one year. And that does include the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 4%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Yusys Technologies better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Yusys Technologies (1 can't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
