In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But in any portfolio, there will be mixed results between individual stocks. So we wouldn't blame long term Anhui Wantong Technology Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:002331) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 16% over a half decade. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 13% in the last 90 days.

After losing 10% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Anhui Wantong TechnologyLtd wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last five years Anhui Wantong TechnologyLtd saw its revenue shrink by 10% per year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. It seems pretty reasonable to us that the share price dipped 3% per year in that time. This loss means the stock shareholders are probably pretty annoyed. Risk averse investors probably wouldn't like this one much.

A Different Perspective

Anhui Wantong TechnologyLtd provided a TSR of 0.9% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 3% endured over half a decade. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around.
