Insigma Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600797) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 25% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough
Insigma Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600797) shares have retraced a considerable 25% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, Insigma Technology may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, since almost half of all companies in the IT industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 4x and even P/S higher than 8x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Insigma Technology Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Insigma Technology over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Insigma Technology's earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
Insigma Technology's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 7.6%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 17% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 17% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that Insigma Technology's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Key Takeaway
Insigma Technology's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Insigma Technology revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
