Improved Revenues Required Before Gemdale Corporation (SHSE:600383) Stock's 35% Jump Looks Justified

Despite an already strong run, Gemdale Corporation (SHSE:600383) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 35% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 2.6% isn't as attractive.

Even after such a large jump in price, Gemdale may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, since almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 1.9x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Gemdale's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Gemdale hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Gemdale's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 36%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 16% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 21% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 10%, which paints a poor picture.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Gemdale's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Bottom Line On Gemdale's P/S

Gemdale's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

It's clear to see that Gemdale maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Gemdale's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
