Gemdale Corporation's (SHSE:600383) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Real Estate industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.6x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Gemdale's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Gemdale has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Gemdale's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 21%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 96% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 16% during the coming year according to the nine analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 9.0%.

With this information, we are not surprised that Gemdale is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What Does Gemdale's P/S Mean For Investors?

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

It's clear to see that Gemdale maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Gemdale's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
