HitGen Inc.'s (SHSE:688222) 28% Jump Shows Its Popularity With Investors
HitGen Inc. (SHSE:688222) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 22% in the last twelve months.
After such a large jump in price, given around half the companies in China's Life Sciences industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 5.3x, you may consider HitGen as a stock to avoid entirely with its 13.3x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How HitGen Has Been Performing
Recent times have been advantageous for HitGen as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.
Keen to find out how analysts think HitGen's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, HitGen would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 13%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 53% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 21% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 18% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why HitGen's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On HitGen's P/S
Shares in HitGen have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of HitGen's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
