While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Zhewen Interactive Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600986) share price up 17% in a single quarter. But that is minimal compensation for the share price under-performance over the last year. In fact, the price has declined 13% in a year, falling short of the returns you could get by investing in an index fund.

With the stock having lost 10% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Even though the Zhewen Interactive Group share price is down over the year, its EPS actually improved. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped.

It's fair to say that the share price does not seem to be reflecting the EPS growth. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics.

In contrast, the 30% drop in revenue is a real concern. If the market sees the weak revenue as jeopardising EPS, that could explain the lower share price.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 0.6% in the twelve months, Zhewen Interactive Group shareholders did even worse, losing 13%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 1.0% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
