Juli Sling (SZSE:002342) Is Finding It Tricky To Allocate Its Capital
When researching a stock for investment, what can tell us that the company is in decline? Typically, we'll see the trend of both return on capital employed (ROCE) declining and this usually coincides with a decreasing amount of capital employed. Basically the company is earning less on its investments and it is also reducing its total assets. So after glancing at the trends within Juli Sling (SZSE:002342), we weren't too hopeful.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Juli Sling is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.023 = CN¥66m ÷ (CN¥4.9b - CN¥2.0b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, Juli Sling has an ROCE of 2.3%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Metals and Mining industry average of 6.7%.

How Are Returns Trending?
There is reason to be cautious about Juli Sling, given the returns are trending downwards. About five years ago, returns on capital were 3.0%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. And on the capital employed front, the business is utilizing roughly the same amount of capital as it was back then. This combination can be indicative of a mature business that still has areas to deploy capital, but the returns received aren't as high due potentially to new competition or smaller margins. So because these trends aren't typically conducive to creating a multi-bagger, we wouldn't hold our breath on Juli Sling becoming one if things continue as they have.
Another thing to note, Juli Sling has a high ratio of current liabilities to total assets of 40%. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line
All in all, the lower returns from the same amount of capital employed aren't exactly signs of a compounding machine. Investors must expect better things on the horizon though because the stock has risen 1.7% in the last five years. Either way, we aren't huge fans of the current trends and so with that we think you might find better investments elsewhere.
