Pulling back 9.7% this week, Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Group's SHSE:600819) five-year decline in earnings may be coming into investors focus
When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. For example, long term Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600819) shareholders have enjoyed a 25% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 15% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 20% in the last year, including dividends.
Although Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Group has shed CN¥589m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last half decade, Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Group became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Group the TSR over the last 5 years was 29%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 20% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 5% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
