There's Reason For Concern Over Lontrue Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:300175) Massive 47% Price Jump
The Lontrue Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300175) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 47%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 68%.
After such a large jump in price, given around half the companies in China's Food industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.9x, you may consider Lontrue as a stock to avoid entirely with its 16.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Lontrue's Recent Performance Look Like?
The revenue growth achieved at Lontrue over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this respectable revenue growth will be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Lontrue's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 13%. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with revenue shrinking 4.8% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 16% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we find it concerning that Lontrue is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On Lontrue's P/S
Shares in Lontrue have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Lontrue currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Should recent medium-term revenue trends persist, it would pose a significant risk to existing shareholders' investments and prospective investors will have a hard time accepting the current value of the stock.
