DBG Technology (SZSE:300735) Is Increasing Its Dividend To CN¥0.25
DBG Technology Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:300735) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to CN¥0.25 on 24th of May. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 1.1% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

DBG Technology's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. The last dividend was quite easily covered by DBG Technology's earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 23.5%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 40% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
DBG Technology Is Still Building Its Track Record
It is great to see that DBG Technology has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2018, the dividend has gone from CN¥0.11 total annually to CN¥0.25. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 15% over that duration. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. DBG Technology hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years. Growth of 1.2% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. This isn't bad in itself, but unless earnings growth pick up we wouldn't expect dividends to grow either.
In Summary
Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
