Further weakness as Xiamen Yanjan New Material (SZSE:300658) drops 10% this week, taking three-year losses to 41%
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Xiamen Yanjan New Material Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300658) share price up 11% in a single quarter. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. After all, the share price is down 42% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.
Since Xiamen Yanjan New Material has shed CN¥194m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Xiamen Yanjan New Material became profitable within the last five years. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.
With a rather small yield of just 1.5% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. With revenue flat over three years, it seems unlikely that the share price is reflecting the top line. There doesn't seem to be any clear correlation between the fundamental business metrics and the share price. That could mean that the stock was previously overrated, or it could spell opportunity now.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 15% in the last year, Xiamen Yanjan New Material shareholders lost 18% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
