Shenzhen MTC Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002429) Shares Fly 26% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
The Shenzhen MTC Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002429) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. Looking further back, the 14% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Shenzhen MTC may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 16.6x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 36x and even P/E's higher than 69x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Recent times have been pleasing for Shenzhen MTC as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Shenzhen MTC's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
Shenzhen MTC's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 11%. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with EPS shrinking 24% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 33% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 38%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why Shenzhen MTC is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Shenzhen MTC's P/E
Shenzhen MTC's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Shenzhen MTC maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
