Alpha Group (SZSE:002292) shares have had a horrible month, losing 26% after a relatively good period beforehand. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 30% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think Alpha Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.5x is worth a mention when the median P/S in China's Leisure industry is similar at about 3.1x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Alpha Group Has Been Performing

Recent revenue growth for Alpha Group has been in line with the industry. It seems that many are expecting the mediocre revenue performance to persist, which has held the P/S ratio back. If this is the case, then at least existing shareholders won't be losing sleep over the current share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Alpha Group would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 9.2% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 25% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 20% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Alpha Group's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Alpha Group's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Alpha Group currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. This uncertainty seems to be reflected in the share price which, while stable, could be higher given the revenue forecasts.
