The Return Trends At Whirlpool China (SHSE:600983) Look Promising
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Whirlpool China (SHSE:600983) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Whirlpool China:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.025 = CN¥66m ÷ (CN¥5.1b - CN¥2.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
Thus, Whirlpool China has an ROCE of 2.5%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Consumer Durables industry average of 8.4%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
Like most people, we're pleased that Whirlpool China is now generating some pretax earnings. While the business is profitable now, it used to be incurring losses on invested capital five years ago. At first glance, it seems the business is getting more proficient at generating returns, because over the same period, the amount of capital employed has reduced by 37%. Whirlpool China could be selling under-performing assets since the ROCE is improving.
On a side note, Whirlpool China's current liabilities are still rather high at 48% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
Our Take On Whirlpool China's ROCE
In summary, it's great to see that Whirlpool China has been able to turn things around and earn higher returns on lower amounts of capital. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 84% return over the last five years. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
