Tecnon Electronics Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:300650) Shares Climb 29% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Those holding Tecnon Electronics Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300650) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 29% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 14% over that time.
Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 29x, you may consider Tecnon Electronics as a stock to avoid entirely with its 68.1x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Tecnon Electronics over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Tecnon Electronics' earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Tecnon Electronics' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 52% decrease to the company's bottom line. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 83% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 41% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we find it concerning that Tecnon Electronics is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Tecnon Electronics' P/E
Tecnon Electronics' P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Tecnon Electronics currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
