SinoDaan Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300635) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 31% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 29% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think SinoDaan's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x is worth a mention when the median P/S in China's Construction industry is similar at about 1.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How SinoDaan Has Been Performing

Revenue has risen firmly for SinoDaan recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. Those who are bullish on SinoDaan will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for SinoDaan, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is SinoDaan's Revenue Growth Trending?

SinoDaan's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 15% last year. As a result, it also grew revenue by 16% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's curious that SinoDaan's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From SinoDaan's P/S?

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for SinoDaan looks to be in line with the rest of the Construction industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that SinoDaan's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's hard to accept the current share price as fair value.
