Shareholders of Cintac (SNSE:CINTAC) Must Be Delighted With Their 399% Total Return
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Don't believe it? Then look at the Cintac S.A. (SNSE:CINTAC) share price. It's 339% higher than it was five years ago. If that doesn't get you thinking about long term investing, we don't know what will. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 19% gain in the last three months. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 12% in the last three months.

We don't think Cintac's revenue of US$389,059,000 is enough to establish significant demand. As a result, we think it's unlikely shareholders are paying much attention to current revenue, but rather speculating on growth in the years to come. For example, investors may be hoping that Cintac finds some valuable resources, before it runs out of money.
Companies that lack both meaningful revenue and profits are usually considered high risk. There is usually a significant chance that they will need more money for business development, putting them at the mercy of capital markets to raise equity. So the share price itself impacts the value of the shares (as it determines the cost of capital). While some such companies go on to make revenue, profits, and generate value, others get hyped up by hopeful naifs before eventually going bankrupt. Some Cintac investors have already had a taste of the sweet taste stocks like this can leave in the mouth, as they gain popularity and attract speculative capital.
Our data indicates that Cintac had US$368m more in total liabilities than it had cash, when it last reported in December 2020. That makes it extremely high risk, in our view. So the fact that the stock is up 55% per year, over 5 years shows that high risks can lead to high rewards, sometimes. Investors must really like its potential. In reality it's hard to have much certainty when valuing a business that has neither revenue or profit. One thing you can do is check if company insiders are buying shares. It's usually a positive if they have, as it may indicate they see value in the stock. Luckily we are in a position to provide you with this free chart of insider buying (and selling).
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Cintac's TSR for the last 5 years was 399%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Cintac shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 2.5% over one year. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 38% a year, is even better. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Cintac better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Cintac .
