A Closer Look At Cicor Technologies' Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to June 2024, Cicor Technologies had an accrual ratio of -0.15. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of CHF42m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of CHF10.2m. Cicor Technologies' free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On Cicor Technologies' Profit Performance
Cicor Technologies' accrual ratio is solid, and indicates strong free cash flow, as we discussed, above. Based on this observation, we consider it likely that Cicor Technologies' statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! Unfortunately, though, its earnings per share actually fell back over the last year. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Cicor Technologies at this point in time. While conducting our analysis, we found that Cicor Technologies has 2 warning signs and it would be unwise to ignore them.
Today we've zoomed in on a single data point to better understand the nature of Cicor Technologies' profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae.
