Bearish: Analysts Just Cut Their Molecular Partners AG (VTX:MOLN) Revenue and EPS estimates
The analysts covering Molecular Partners AG (VTX:MOLN) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.
Following the downgrade, the most recent consensus for Molecular Partners from its five analysts is for revenues of CHF98m in 2020 which, if met, would be a huge 381% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. The losses are expected to disappear over the next year or so, with forecasts for a profit of CHF2.10 per share this year. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of CHF111m and earnings per share (EPS) of CHF2.82 in 2020. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a measurable cut to revenue estimates and a pretty serious decline to earnings per share numbers as well.
View our latest analysis for Molecular Partners
The consensus price target fell 19% to CHF25.67, with the weaker earnings outlook clearly leading analyst valuation estimates. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. The most optimistic Molecular Partners analyst has a price target of CHF50.00 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at CHF6.00. As you can see the range of estimates is wide, with the lowest valuation coming in at less than half the most bullish estimate, suggesting there are some strongly diverging views on how think this business will perform. As a result it might not be possible to derive much meaning from the consensus price target, which is after all just an average of this wide range of estimates.
Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. For example, we noticed that Molecular Partners' rate of growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully, with revenues forecast to grow 381%, well above its historical decline of 14% a year over the past five years. Compare this against analyst estimates for the wider industry, which suggest that (in aggregate) industry revenues are expected to grow 21% next year. So it looks like Molecular Partners is expected to grow faster than its competitors, at least for a while.
The Bottom Line
The biggest issue in the new estimates is that analysts have reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds lay ahead for Molecular Partners. While analysts did downgrade their revenue estimates, these forecasts still imply revenues will perform better than the wider market. After such a stark change in sentiment from analysts, we'd understand if readers now felt a bit wary of Molecular Partners.
Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Molecular Partners going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
