COLTENE Holding (VTX:CLTN) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
COLTENE Holding AG (VTX:CLTN) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 30th of April to CHF2.50, which will be 25% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of CHF2.00. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.7%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

COLTENE Holding's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Based on the last payment, COLTENE Holding's profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 12.0%. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 66% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was CHF2.50, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CHF2.00. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 2.2% per year. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Although it's important to note that COLTENE Holding's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time. The earnings growth is anaemic, and the company is paying out 97% of its profit. This gives limited room for the company to raise the dividend in the future.
Our Thoughts On COLTENE Holding's Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think COLTENE Holding will make a great income stock. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think COLTENE Holding is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
