Do ABB's (VTX:ABBN) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

Published
SWX:ABBN

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like ABB (VTX:ABBN), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide ABB with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

ABB's Improving Profits

ABB has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. ABB's EPS skyrocketed from US$1.57 to US$1.99, in just one year; a result that's bound to bring a smile to shareholders. That's a impressive gain of 27%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that ABB is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.0 percentage points to 15%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are ABB Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since ABB has a market capitalisation of CHF91b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$91m. We note that this amounts to 0.1% of the company, which may be small owing to the sheer size of ABB but it's still worth mentioning. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves.

Is ABB Worth Keeping An Eye On?

For growth investors, ABB's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in ABB's continuing strength. The growth and insider confidence is looked upon well and so it's worthwhile to investigate further with a view to discern the stock's true value. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with ABB , and understanding it should be part of your investment process.
