Is EverGen Infrastructure (CVE:EVGN) Weighed On By Its Debt Load?

David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that EverGen Infrastructure Corp. (CVE:EVGN) does use debt in its business. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is EverGen Infrastructure's Debt?

As you can see below, EverGen Infrastructure had CA$17.5m of debt at September 2025, down from CA$18.9m a year prior. On the flip side, it has CA$2.16m in cash leading to net debt of about CA$15.4m.

A Look At EverGen Infrastructure's Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, EverGen Infrastructure had liabilities of CA$8.01m due within 12 months, and liabilities of CA$24.8m due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of CA$2.16m and CA$3.44m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by CA$27.2m.

This deficit casts a shadow over the CA$7.18m company, like a colossus towering over mere mortals. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, EverGen Infrastructure would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine EverGen Infrastructure's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.

View our latest analysis for EverGen Infrastructure

In the last year EverGen Infrastructure had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 20%, to CA$11m. To be frank that doesn't bode well.

Caveat Emptor

Not only did EverGen Infrastructure's revenue slip over the last twelve months, but it also produced negative earnings before interest and tax (EBIT). Its EBIT loss was a whopping CA$4.0m. If you consider the significant liabilities mentioned above, we are extremely wary of this investment. That said, it is possible that the company will turn its fortunes around. Nevertheless, we would not bet on it given that it vaporized CA$3.4m in cash over the last twelve months, and it doesn't have much by way of liquid assets. So we consider this a high risk stock and we wouldn't be at all surprised if the company asks shareholders for money before long. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it.
