Examining Cashflow Against Titanium Transportation Group's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Titanium Transportation Group has an accrual ratio of 0.23 for the year to December 2023. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, which is hardly a good thing. Even though it reported a profit of CA$10.2m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through CA$41m in the last year. We also note that Titanium Transportation Group's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of CA$41m. However, that's not all there is to consider. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
The fact that the company had unusual items boosting profit by CA$3.2m, in the last year, probably goes some way to explain why its accrual ratio was so weak. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. If Titanium Transportation Group doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.
Our Take On Titanium Transportation Group's Profit Performance
Summing up, Titanium Transportation Group received a nice boost to profit from unusual items, but could not match its paper profit with free cash flow. For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at Titanium Transportation Group's statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level.
