Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Telesat Corporation (TSE:TSAT) Even After 37% Share Price Boost

Despite an already strong run, Telesat Corporation (TSE:TSAT) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 37% in the last thirty days. Looking further back, the 21% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Even after such a large jump in price, Telesat may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.9x, since almost half of all companies in Canada have P/E ratios greater than 16x and even P/E's higher than 33x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Telesat has been very sluggish. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Telesat's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Telesat would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 75%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 44% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

What We Can Learn From Telesat's P/E?

Telesat's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
