TELUS' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. The last dividend made up quite a large portion of free cash flows, and this was made worse by the lack of free cash flows. Generally, we think that this would be a risky long term practice.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 20.0%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 85%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
TELUS Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2012, the annual payment back then was CA$0.58, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CA$1.4. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.2% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.
TELUS Could Grow Its Dividend
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see that TELUS has been growing its earnings per share at 5.3% a year over the past five years. Past earnings growth has been decent, but unless this is one of those rare businesses that can grow without additional capital investment or marketing spend, we'd generally expect the higher payout ratio to limit its future growth prospects.
TELUS' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. Although they have been consistent in the past, we think the payments are a little high to be sustained. We don't think TELUS is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
