Route1 Inc.'s (CVE:ROI) 27% Dip In Price Shows Sentiment Is Matching Revenues
Route1 Inc. (CVE:ROI) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 38% in the last year.
After such a large drop in price, Route1 may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.2x and even P/S higher than 8x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Route1's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
For example, consider that Route1's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Route1 will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Route1's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 22%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 43% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 21% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that Route1 is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
What Does Route1's P/S Mean For Investors?
Shares in Route1 have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Route1 confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
