We're Not Very Worried About Nubeva Technologies' (CVE:NBVA) Cash Burn Rate

We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.

So should Nubeva Technologies (CVE:NBVA) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

When Might Nubeva Technologies Run Out Of Money?

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. Nubeva Technologies has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the US$3.4m in cash it held at July 2022. Importantly, its cash burn was US$2.6m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 15 months from July 2022. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Is Nubeva Technologies' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Whilst it's great to see that Nubeva Technologies has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced US$282k, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. With the cash burn rate up 7.5% in the last year, it seems that the company is ratcheting up investment in the business over time. However, the company's true cash runway will therefore be shorter than suggested above, if spending continues to increase. Admittedly, we're a bit cautious of Nubeva Technologies due to its lack of significant operating revenues. We prefer most of the stocks on this list of stocks that analysts expect to grow.

Can Nubeva Technologies Raise More Cash Easily?

Since its cash burn is increasing (albeit only slightly), Nubeva Technologies shareholders should still be mindful of the possibility it will require more cash in the future. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Nubeva Technologies has a market capitalisation of US$84m and burnt through US$2.6m last year, which is 3.2% of the company's market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

Is Nubeva Technologies' Cash Burn A Worry?

On this analysis of Nubeva Technologies' cash burn, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap was reassuring, while its increasing cash burn has us a bit worried.
