Lightspeed Commerce (TSE:LSPD) shareholders have endured a 82% loss from investing in the stock three years ago

TSX:LSPD

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Lightspeed Commerce Inc. (TSE:LSPD) share price up 18% in a single quarter. But that is meagre solace in the face of the shocking decline over three years. The share price has sunk like a leaky ship, down 82% in that time. So we're relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.

Lightspeed Commerce wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over three years, Lightspeed Commerce grew revenue at 30% per year. That is faster than most pre-profit companies. So why has the share priced crashed 22% per year, in the same time? The share price makes us wonder if there is an issue with profitability. Ultimately, revenue growth doesn't amount to much if the business can't scale well. If the company is low on cash, it may have to raise capital soon.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. A Different Perspective

Lightspeed Commerce shareholders gained a total return of 11% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 6% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
