Docebo Inc.'s (TSE:DCBO) Stock Retreats 26% But Earnings Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Docebo Inc. (TSE:DCBO) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 58% share price decline.

Even after such a large drop in price, Docebo's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26.5x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 16x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Docebo has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Docebo?

Docebo's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 29% gain to the company's bottom line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 550% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 47% as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 23% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Docebo's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Docebo's very lofty P/E. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Docebo's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
