The Market Lifts PesoRama Inc. (CVE:PESO) Shares 27% But It Can Do More
PesoRama Inc. (CVE:PESO) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 3.4% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies operating in Canada's Specialty Retail industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.4x, you may still consider PesoRama as an attractive investment with its 0.6x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has PesoRama Performed Recently?
The revenue growth achieved at PesoRama over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on PesoRama will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

PesoRama's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 19%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 181% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 15% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it odd that PesoRama is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Bottom Line On PesoRama's P/S
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift PesoRama's P/S close to the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of PesoRama revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. Potential investors that are sceptical over continued revenue performance may be preventing the P/S ratio from matching previous strong performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 5 warning signs with PesoRama (at least 4 which are potentially serious), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
