There's No Escaping Medicure Inc.'s (CVE:MPH) Muted Revenues Despite A 26% Share Price Rise

Medicure Inc. (CVE:MPH) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 16% is also fairly reasonable.

Although its price has surged higher, Medicure's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 7.7x and even P/S above 51x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Medicure Performed Recently?

For example, consider that Medicure's financial performance has been pretty ordinary lately as revenue growth is non-existent. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this benign revenue growth rate will likely underperform the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Medicure would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with revenue down 3.7% overall from three years ago. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 59% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that Medicure's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does Medicure's P/S Mean For Investors?

Even after such a strong price move, Medicure's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Medicure revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
