Those holding Charlotte's Web Holdings, Inc. (TSE:CWEB) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 33% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 37% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, Charlotte's Web Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Pharmaceuticals industry in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.3x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Charlotte's Web Holdings' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Charlotte's Web Holdings hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Charlotte's Web Holdings would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 15%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 34% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 2.5% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 5.5% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Charlotte's Web Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Charlotte's Web Holdings' P/S

Despite Charlotte's Web Holdings' share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As expected, our analysis of Charlotte's Web Holdings' analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
