Strong week for Planet 13 Holdings (CSE:PLTH) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of three-year loss
Planet 13 Holdings Inc. (CSE:PLTH) shareholders are doubtless heartened to see the share price bounce 33% in just one week. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. The share price has sunk like a leaky ship, down 82% in that time. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
The recent uptick of 33% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
Our free stock report includes 3 warning signs investors should be aware of before investing in Planet 13 Holdings. Read for free now.Planet 13 Holdings wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
In the last three years Planet 13 Holdings saw its revenue shrink by 4.0% per year. That is not a good result. Having said that the 22% annualized share price decline highlights the risk of investing in unprofitable companies. We're generally averse to companies with declining revenues, but we're not alone in that. There's no more than a snowball's chance in hell that share price will head back to its old highs, in the short term.
The company's revenue and earnings (over time) are depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective
Investors in Planet 13 Holdings had a tough year, with a total loss of 57%, against a market gain of about 14%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 12% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Planet 13 Holdings is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those doesn't sit too well with us...
