The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. For example, the High Tide Inc. (CSE:HITI) share price is down 19% in the last year. That's well below the market decline of 1.1%. Because High Tide hasn't been listed for many years, the market is still learning about how the business performs. It's up 12% in the last seven days.

Given that High Tide didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

High Tide grew its revenue by 207% over the last year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. Given the revenue growth, the share price drop of 19% seems quite harsh. Our sympathies to shareholders who are now underwater. Prima facie, revenue growth like that should be a good thing, so it's worth checking whether losses have stabilized. Our monkey brains haven't evolved to think exponentially, so humans do tend to underestimate companies that have exponential growth.

A Different Perspective

While High Tide shareholders are down 19% for the year, the market itself is up 1.1%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. Putting aside the last twelve months, it's good to see the share price has rebounded by 5.6%, in the last ninety days. This could just be a bounce because the selling was too aggressive, but fingers crossed it's the start of a new trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that High Tide is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is significant...
