There's No Escaping Majestic Gold Corp.'s (CVE:MJS) Muted Earnings Despite A 41% Share Price Rise
Majestic Gold Corp. (CVE:MJS) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 41% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 100% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Majestic Gold may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.3x, since almost half of all companies in Canada have P/E ratios greater than 15x and even P/E's higher than 31x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Majestic Gold certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Majestic Gold's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 36% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 31% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 22% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why Majestic Gold is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Final Word
Despite Majestic Gold's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Majestic Gold revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
