Luca Mining Corp. (CVE:LUCA) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 29% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last month tops off a massive increase of 150% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Luca Mining may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.6x and even P/S higher than 22x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Luca Mining's Recent Performance Look Like?

Luca Mining certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Luca Mining will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Luca Mining?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Luca Mining's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 31% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 58% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 21% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Luca Mining is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

The Final Word

Luca Mining's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

In line with expectations, Luca Mining maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
