Even With A 30% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Luca Mining Corp.'s (CVE:LUCA) Performance Completely
Luca Mining Corp. (CVE:LUCA) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 30% after a shaky period beforehand. But the last month did very little to improve the 83% share price decline over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, Luca Mining may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, since almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 2.8x and even P/S higher than 22x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Luca Mining Performed Recently?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Luca Mining has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Luca Mining would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 2.8% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 79% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 55% per year as estimated by the lone analyst watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 12% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it odd that Luca Mining is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Key Takeaway
Shares in Luca Mining have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
A look at Luca Mining's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
