Benign Growth For IMPACT Silver Corp. (CVE:IPT) Underpins Stock's 26% Plummet

IMPACT Silver Corp. (CVE:IPT) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 26% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 32% in the last year.

Following the heavy fall in price, IMPACT Silver may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 4.8x and even P/S higher than 31x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has IMPACT Silver Performed Recently?

IMPACT Silver certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For IMPACT Silver?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like IMPACT Silver's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 69% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 142% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 41% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we can see why IMPACT Silver is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

The Bottom Line On IMPACT Silver's P/S

Shares in IMPACT Silver have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

In line with expectations, IMPACT Silver maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.

Having said that, be aware IMPACT Silver is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant.
